Description

What are Nigella Seeds?

Nigella seeds are an aromatic spice that elevates your cooking to a unique and flavorful experience. They are often referred to as black cumin, 'Love-in-a-mist', or Kalonji.

Nigella seeds originate from an annual flowering plant in the Ranunculaceae family. The plant has its roots in southern and southwestern Asia but has been growing in many Danish gardens since the Middle Ages, reaching a height of 50 cm. It is adorned with beautiful light blue or white flowers, which transform into seed capsules filled with edible seeds come autumn.

The seeds are small and matte black. They may somewhat resemble black sesame or black caraway, but they have nothing in common with either.

The flowers are delicate and usually light blue or white, with 5-10 petals. The fruit is a large and inflated capsule consisting of 3-7 united chambers, each containing many seeds used as a spice, sometimes as a substitute for true black cumin (Bunium bulbocastanum).

The Nigella seeds are organic.

Latin name: Nigella sativa

Usage

Nigella seeds have an aromatic and spicy essence, suitable for many purposes.
The spice has a cress and pepper-like flavor, comprising bitterness as well as a slight sweetness. Rubbing them gently between your fingers releases a strawberry-like scent. The seeds are typically roasted in hot oil on a sizzling pan before being added to dishes. The heat enhances their aromatic and peppery essence.

Nigella seeds are commonly used as a sprinkle on bread in the Middle East and Turkey, often added to Indian naan bread and other baked goods to provide a spicy and intense flavor. They can also be decorative on salads, in marinades, and in warm stews.

Additionally, they can be a delightful addition to chutneys and spice blends like curry and Bengali five spices. Truly, the only limit is your imagination when seeking to tantalize your taste buds.
Our taste buds aren't stimulated until the food is flavorful. Spices are effective components for activating our taste senses in a busy everyday life, so we're not just eating but actually enjoying the food.

Nigella seeds, in particular, are a brilliant means to jazz up mundane baked goods or inspire your cooking towards Middle Eastern flavors. These seeds allow you to be creative and experiment with new tastes in your culinary endeavors.
