What is rooibos tea?

Rooibos tea can also be described as an herbal tea. Strictly speaking, it is not a “real” tea, as it is not made from the leaves of the Camellia Sinensis plant – like green or black tea. Despite this, it is commonly referred to as “red tea.”

Rooibos tea is produced by first picking, sorting, and then drying the needles. If green Rooibos is desired, the needles undergo a heat treatment to prevent oxidation. The taste of green Rooibos is therefore lighter and more herbaceous. If red Rooibos is preferred, the needles are left to oxidize in a process similar to black tea. Afterwards, the Rooibos needles are exposed to solar heat, which causes the enzymes to break down completely, giving the tea its characteristic reddish-brown colour.
