What is rooibos tea?

Rooibos tea can also be described as an herbal tea. Therefore, it is not a real tea either, as it is not made from leaves from the tea plant Camelia Sinesis – just like e.g. green tea and black tea. Despite that, it is popularly known as red tea.

Rooibos tea is produced by first picking, sorting and then drying the needles. If you want green rooibos tea, the needles undergo a heat treatment to prevent oxidation. The taste of green rooibos is therefore characterized by being lighter and it has a herbaceous taste. If, on the other hand, you want the red rooibos tea, you let the needles oxidize as much as black tea. The rooibos needles are then exposed to solar heat, which causes the enzymes to break down completely. It gives the reddish brown color.
