Tea selection
Tea is more than just a drink. For some, it is almost a ritual. When they get up, while working, when relaxing, and before going to bed – a cup of tea is always part of the moment. Many also associate tea with coziness and togetherness. In fact, tea comes second among the Danes’ favorite drinks, which is why there must also be a wide selection to choose from.
Explore Nordic Tea’s broad range of teas. We have gathered the best varieties, offering something for every taste.
Here we have collected all the teas we sell in our shop – both organic teas and conventional ones.
What is tea?
Most of the tea we drink is made from the leaves of the Camellia Sinensis plant, also known as the Chinese tea bush, which is the most widespread. In second place among popular tea bushes is the Indian variety Camellia Assamica, which is also widely used in tea production.
There are black, green, and white teas, each processed differently, which also influences their flavour profiles. Likewise, the recommended water temperature, steeping time, and dosage vary between the different types of tea.
The history of tea
Tea is an ancient beverage that has been enjoyed for centuries across the world. There are many legends about the discovery of tea. The first mention dates back to an ancient Chinese story from 2700 BC under Emperor Shen Nung. According to the story, the emperor discovered tea during one of his travels across the Chinese Empire. While resting, some leaves from a bush fell into his cup of boiling water. He was so delighted by the taste and the refreshing effect that he began cultivating the bush we now know as Camellia Sinensis.
Tea was first introduced to Europe in 1610, when the first shipment of tea arrived from China on a Dutch ship. For many years, imports to Europe were limited, as the journey from the East could take almost a year. Tea was therefore a very expensive and sought-after product. By the 19th century, however, tea had become cheaper and more widespread.
It is not known exactly when tea first came to Denmark, but there are strong indications that Denmark followed the rest of Europe in the 17th century. Historical documentation shows that teapots were already present in Denmark as early as 1655.
The different types of tea
The most well-known types of tea are black, green and white tea. They all come from Camellia Sinensis or Camellia Assamica but are treated differently.
Black tea
The black tea goes through the longest process before it can be enjoyed. The tea has to go through a total of five stages before it is finished: picking, drying, rolling, fermentation and finally roasting. Black tea often has a strong and rich taste.

Green tea
The green tea is known for its fine color, clean taste and many good properties. The tea has a high content of antioxidants, which is why you often hear about it in connection with health. However, there is no direct evidence that green tea has health benefits.

White tea
The white tea is almost unprocessed and is produced from fresh shoots from tea bushes. After the shoots are picked, they are left to dry, and the white teas are therefore neither rolled nor dried with heat. The taste is often very mild, and the tea is characterized by being the one with the lowest caffeine content.
