Earl Gray tea – the legend behind it
Earl Gray takes its name from the British Prime Minister (1764 – 1845) Charles Grey, the 2nd Earl Grey. The origin of the tea has many different legends attached to it. One says that a returning diplomat presented Gray with a tea infused with bergamot oil as a thank you for a rescue mission in China.
Another legend has it that it was a grateful mandarin who introduced the famous tea to Gray as thanks for the Prime Minister's men saving his son from drowning. Regardless of whether it is one, the other or a whole third story, today Earl Gray tea is one of the most well-known of English teas - and it is loved all over the world.
The flavor notes in Earl Grey
Earl Gray tea is known and loved for its distinct and seductive flavor profile that stands out from other teas. The heart of Earl Grey's character lies in the enchanting scent and taste of bergamot oil, which is an extract from the aromatic citrus fruit bergamot. This unique ingredient adds a fresh, slightly strong and slightly floral note to the rich and full flavor of black tea. The result is a refreshing and elegant tea experience that stimulates the senses.
Earl Gray is found, in Nordic Tea, in 15 different varieties in the black tea, each of which adds a unique twist to the classic blend. Some versions may include other citrus notes, such as lemon or lime, to provide a more complex flavor palette. And the many different Earl Gray teas are also produced with different basic teas - Darjeeling, Yunaan etc.
Others mix in subtle floral aromas, like lavender or jasmine, to create a more aromatic and calming experience. At Nordic Tea, there are even variants in green and Rooibos tea instead of traditional black tea , which gives a lighter flavor profile.
Earl Gray tea is known for its enchanting taste and aroma, but to get the best experience it is important to pay attention to the steeping time. In general, it is recommended to let Earl Gray tea steep for about 3-5 minutes. A shorter steeping time will produce a lighter and more subtle taste, while a longer steeping time emphasizes the tea's robust and full-bodied character.
