Herbal tea
Herbal tea is a broad term for dried leaves, flowers, roots, seeds, stems, fruits, berries, and spices that are infused with boiling water so the flavours are extracted from the ingredients. Herbal tea can either consist of a single herb, such as chamomile, or a blend of different plants that together create a more nuanced flavour experience.

What is herbal tea?
Herbal tea, also called Tisane (from the Latin meaning “medical drink”), is actually not a tea in the traditional sense, as it does not contain leaves from the tea plant Camellia Sinensis. Instead, herbal tea is based on pure herbs such as leaves, bark, dried flowers, roots, seeds, and various spices. For this reason, it would be more accurate to call it a herbal drink – though “herbal tea” remains the most common term in everyday language.
The most popular herbs include mint, nettle, hibiscus, ginger, rooibos, and of course chamomile, which many people also associate with traditional household remedies for sore throats or colds.
At Nordic Tea, you will find a wide variety of herbs, each with its own natural flavours and unique properties.
Herbal tea and caffeine
The key difference between traditional tea and herbal tea is that herbal tea does not naturally contain caffeine. Traditional teas such as black , green and white tea typically contain around 20–50 mg of caffeine per cup.
Therefore herbal tea is an excellent alternative for an evening drink, as it allows you to unwind without being affected by caffeine before bedtime. Replacing your usual evening tea with a herbal infusion is therefore a natural choice.
Is herbal tea healthy?
Herbs have been used as medicine for thousands of years, dating back to ancient Egypt, where chamomile was one of the first herbs to be enjoyed and was used to honour the gods, embalm the dead, and heal the sick.
The herbs used in herbal teas are generally rich in vitamins and minerals. Nettle, for example, is known to be rich in vitamins A, B, and C, as well as minerals such as calcium, magnesium, and potassium. It also has a relatively high protein content.
