What is yellow tea?

Yellow tea is a very rare tea that was very famous during China's dynasties in 1100-1912. It is a tea which, at the time, was only reserved for emperors. The tea is only produced in a few mountain areas in China to a very limited extent. You can find the tea i.a. in the provinces of Anhui, Hunan, Yunnan and Sichuan.

Yellow tea is not very well known here. In terms of taste, however, it is similar green tea . At the same time, yellow tea is reminiscent of Oolong tea more when it comes to the claimed health benefits.

Yellow tea has one bud and one to two leaves. The expensive yellow tea leaves are picked only a few days a year. This happens early in the spring. The cheaper yellow tea leaves are picked in summer, and some are not even picked until autumn. Yellow tea leaves, picked in early spring, contain 'young' nutrients which are believed to be very beneficial for us. The tea leaves, which are picked in autumn, on the other hand, have more nutrients, which are said to work in a different way.

The making of yellow tea until it is fully brewed in your cup

The production of yellow tea depends on the type of yellow tea. But common to all types is that they are exposed to very high temperatures to begin with. In this way, the tea's unique taste and color are preserved. The tea is cooled by being rolled on a bamboo tray. The yellow tea is then packed in some special, robust paper.

Here, the wrapped tea leaves are stored in bamboo baskets or wooden boxes, depending on the type of yellow tea. Some types of the yellow tea are then regularly opened, cooled and then repackaged.

This processing process lasts three days until the yellow tea leaves are fully fermented. The particularly demanding production of yellow tea means that the vegetable-like taste of yellow tea is removed.

When brewing yellow tea, a flat tablespoon of yellow tea is poured over with 80 ̊ C hot water. Then let the tea steep for 3-4 minutes. Then you have a tasty and even rare cup of tea.
