Description

Gunpowder 'Temple of Heaven' Organic

Also known as Gunpowder tea, it is made from small green tea leaves and after fermentation, it is machine-rolled into pellets resembling gunpowder. The tea leaves are specially selected according to quality, size, and shape so they can be rolled into very small, tight pellets. Temple of Heaven Gunpowder (also called Pinhead) comes from the Zhejiang province in China and is the highest quality available in Gunpowder tea.

The leaves are picked first in April and May when the quality of the green leaf is at its peak. The leaves are then steamed and rolled tightly.

When preparing this tea, part of the ritual is to take a pinch of the gunpowder and drop it into a porcelain Gaiwan to hear the clink and clatter as the pellets hit the sides of the cup. Boiling water causes them to open like flowers and slowly sink to the bottom, adding a visual delight to drinking this tea.

Because Gunpowder Temple of Heaven is rolled more tightly than other teas, less is required when brewing. Use half a teaspoon per cup and let it steep for 1-2 minutes in boiling water. If you want to avoid the very slight bitterness in the tea, use water at 72 - 75°C. It's also really good in a larger pot.

Brewing Instructions:

  • Dosage: 10 grams per liter (3-4 teaspoons)
  • Steeping time: 2-3 minutes
  • Water temperature: 72 - 74°C
