Bengal Pepper
Long pepper (Piper longum), also known as Indian long pepper or Bengal Pepper, is a flowering vine in the family Piperaceae, cultivated for its fruit, which is typically dried and used as a spice. Long pepper has a taste that resembles its close relative Piper nigrum (black pepper) but is more intense.
Today, long pepper is a very rare ingredient in European kitchens, but it can still be found in Indian and Nepalese vegetable pickles, some North African spice mixes, and in Indonesian and Malaysian cooking. It is readily available in Indian grocery stores, where it is usually labeled as pippali.
