Cayenne pepper is a semi-shrub grown in greenhouses for its 2-4 cm long, red fruits when ripe. These fruits are used dried and ground as a spice; the fresh fruits are not as hot as the dried ones. Cayenne pepper is a chili product that we recognize as a reddish-brown powder resembling paprika. However, cayenne pepper has a much stronger and more fiery taste than paprika.
This Cayenne Pepper we offer is 100% organic.Dried chili peppers of the cayenne variety are used to make cayenne pepper. The chili fruits are picked when ripe, then dried and ground into powder. The strength of the cayenne pepper can vary depending on whether the seeds are ground with it or not. The more seeds, the lighter and stronger the spice.
Latin name: Capsicum frutescens
Usage
Cayenne pepper can be used with meat and poultry, especially in stews and grilled dishes. It can also add a kick to omelets and cheese dishes.
Cayenne pepper is also used in dressings and sauces for shellfish and fish. It is often the spicy component in curry blends and chili sauces available in jars or bottles.
Cayenne powder quickly loses some of its powerful flavor if left standing. Therefore, it should be stored dry and airtight.
Origin
The name cayenne refers to a Caribbean island called Cayenne, though it did not originate there. Cayenne pepper originates from South America. Today, it is grown in India, East Africa, Mexico, and the USA.
Cayenne pepper was previously called Indian pepper. However, this is incorrect as it is not related to peppercorns, and the connection to India is based on a misunderstanding when Columbus mistakenly believed he had reached India upon arriving in America.
