Organic Fenugreek Seeds
Common Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum) is an annual herbaceous plant with an upright growth habit. All parts of the plant have a strong spicy aroma. Fresh shoots and dried seeds are used as a spice, either on their own or in various blends with other spices, such as curry.
The seeds of this plant are particularly popular as a spice in Indian/Pakistani and Thai cuisine and are a key ingredient in most curry blends. The plant's leaves (dried or fresh) are also sometimes used as a herb. Fenugreek seeds are most often found in dried form. They are yellowish, rhombus-shaped, and very hard. Among other compounds, the seeds contain a lactone (cyclic ester) called sotolon (3-hydroxy-4,5-dimethylfuran-2(5H)-one). Sotolon is intensely aromatic and is primarily responsible for the characteristic curry smell. Consuming even small amounts of fenugreek seeds can result in a strong odor in sweat and urine.
