Tai Ping Hou Kui Green Tea

Taiping houkui (Chinese: 太平猴魁; pinyin: tàipíng hóukuí) means "peaceful monkey leader". It is grown at the foot of the Huangshan Mountains in the former Taiping Municipality of Anhui Province.

The tea has been produced since the beginning of the 20th century and is produced around the small village of Hou Keng. It won the "King of Tea" award at the 2004 China Tea Exhibition and is sometimes referred to as one of the famous China teas.

The best Tai Ping Hou Kui is grown in the villages of Houkeng, Hougang and Yanjiachun. Tea produced in the surrounding areas is called by the same name, but costs much less. Fresh Hou Kui green tea is known for its "two knives and a pole": two straight leaves that squeeze the huge bud with white hairs. The oven-dried leaves are deep green with red veins underneath. The tea shoots can be as long as 15 centimeters. They are picked from Shi Da Cha, a variety of Camelia Sinensis with very large leaves found only in Anhui province.

Counterfeiting happens often, unfortunately. Factories can produce symmetrical Hou Kui tea that looks even better than the authentic handmade type.
