Organic basil
Basil originally originates from tropical areas in Asia and eastern Africa. In India it has been cultivated at the temples for more than 5000 years. All basil varieties love heat but not direct harsh sun. They thrive in a greenhouse or on a warm terrace in a pot. We plant basil with great success under the greenhouse plants. Here there is partial shade, good heat and nutrient-rich soil, e.g. between two tomatoes, as the tomato plant secretes a substance that acts as a deterrent to aphids.
Basil is used a lot in southern European cuisine, and is especially good for tomato dishes. Also suitable for sauces, salads and of course pesto.
Use in food: Basil can be advantageously used in food - both the flowers, leaves and stems. Basil is mainly used in salads, pestos and for meat and pasta dishes. Basil is often added to hot dishes at the very end, as the oils that create the aroma often disappear when they are heated.
The whole plant contains essential oil (methylchavicol, cineole and linalool) and tannins. This gives it a strongly spicy scent in the direction of cloves.
Latin name: Ocimum basilicum
