When do you give Easter eggs?
Easter eggs are typically given in the days leading up to Easter – and especially around Easter Saturday and Easter Sunday, when many gather for lunch, coffee, and spring coziness. It can be a small gift for the host, the children, a colleague, or someone you would like to surprise with a seasonal greeting.
In Denmark, we also have the particularly cozy tradition directly linked to "giving" Easter eggs: the gækkebrev (a cutout letter). If you send a gækkebrev and the recipient correctly guesses who you are, you owe them an Easter egg. If the recipient does not guess the sender, you have an Easter egg coming to you.
Where do Easter eggs come from?
Easter eggs have roots in ancient spring traditions, where the egg symbolized new life and renewal. In many homes, it started as real eggs that were boiled, decorated, and used as decorations or small gifts at Easter. Over time, it evolved into the form most people know today: Easter eggs filled with sweet surprises and wrapped so that it feels like a gift in itself.
In Denmark, the Easter egg has also gained a special place through the gækkebrev. Here, the Easter egg becomes not only a seasonal gift but part of a game: a small "bet" about who is hiding behind the gækkebrev. It is precisely that combination that makes the tradition so Danish – a bit of poetry, a bit of teasing, and a sweet reward.
