What are Nigella Seeds?
Nigella seeds are an aromatic spice that brings your cooking to a very special and tasty experience. The seeds are also often called black cumin, 'Virgin in the green' or Kalonji.
They originally come from the annual flowering plant which is in the Ranunculaceae family. The plant has its roots in southern and southwestern Asia, but since the Middle Ages has grown in many Danish gardens, where it can reach a height of 50 cm. Here it adorns itself with its beautiful pale blue or white flowers, which in the autumn turn into seed pods filled with the edible seeds.
The seeds are small and matte black. They may partly look like black sesame or black cumin, but have nothing in common with either.
The flowers are delicate and usually pale blue or white, with 5-10 petals. The fruit is a large and inflated capsule consisting of 3-7 united compartments, each containing many seeds, used as a spice, sometimes as a substitute for the true black cumin ( Bunium bulbocastanum ).
The nigella seeds are organic.
Latin name: Nigella sativa
Application
The spice has a cress and peppery taste, which contains both bitterness and a slight sweetness. If you rub them lightly between your fingers, you will evoke an almost strawberry-like scent. The seeds are typically roasted in hot oil on a hot pan before they are added to the food. The heat accentuates the aromatic and peppery essence.
Nigella seeds are typically used as a sprinkle on bread in the Middle East and Turkey, where they are often added to Indian naan bread and other baked goods to give a spicy and intense flavor. They can also be decorative on salads, in marinades and in hot stews.
In addition, they can also be a delicate addition in chutney and spice mixes such as curry and Bengali five spices. In reality, the only limit is your imagination when you seek to stimulate your taste buds.
Nigella seeds in particular are a brilliant remedy for e.g. to spice up trivial baked goods, or to inspire your cooking in the direction of the Middle Eastern taste buds. The seeds allow you to be creative and experiment with new flavors in your cooking.
