Fennel seeds organic
Fennel seeds have their origins in the Mediterranean region. It has spread throughout Europe and the United States. is a spice that has a sweet licorice-like taste. Fennel seeds are similar to seeds from anise, dill and cumin. And in taste and smell, they are very similar to aniseed.
Fennel seeds contain five to six percent of an essential oil that is also found in the rest of the plant. The essential oil consists mostly of anethole, which is a substance also found in anise and star anise, and which gives a characteristic licorice taste.
Fennel seeds are mainly used as a spice in Italian and Indian cuisine. An example from Italy is the cured sausage finocchiona from Florence. They are used in fish dishes, meat dishes with lamb or beef, soups, salads and dressings and are also included in many Indian curry mixes and in the Chinese fifth spice.
They are also used as a spice in bread and cakes. They are good together with rye flour, as the sweet, spicy licorice flavor goes well with the slightly earthy flavor of the rye.
They can be bought both as whole, dried seeds and as ground powder. The most intense flavor is obtained from the whole seeds and we have chosen not to have ground fennel.
Fennel seeds can be used as they are, or they can be roasted on a hot pan, then crushed in a mortar or spice grinder before adding to the food. Roasting brings out the flavor.
