Smoked tea - Shao Wu Lapsang Souchong organic

Lapsang Souchong smoked tea comes from the Wuyi mountains in the Chinese province of Fujian, from the town of Tarry. Lapsang means "smoke" in Chinese and Souchong is the tea type that all aged Chinese teas are called.

The story goes that smoked tea was "invented" by accident 1100 years ago in the town of Tarry, when a tea production house burned down just after harvest. The farmers tried to save as much of the harvest as possible, but discovered that the tea had been ruined by smoke. But nothing should go to waste, so the farmers tried drinking the tea, which now had a distinct smoked flavor, and they liked it.

Today, and eager to meet the high demand for smoked tea, tea producers have sped up the drying process by drying the tea leaves over an open fire of wood made from pine, the same type of wood used for smoking Bornholm smoked herring.

This special tea type is often used in blends with Earl Grey tea, or in other blends where the flavor of smoke is desired.
